Welcome aboard The Mystic Express! My name is Lucy, and this whole adventure began when I had a very strong hunch to buy an old school bus. Was it practical? Absolutely not. Did I buy it anyway? Yes. And that’s when things became extremely strange.
For starters, the bus wasn’t empty! Living inside were seven colorful and rather opinionated Mischievous Goddesses: Sunny, Amber, Melody, Roco, Madame Lotus, Mama Mojo and Grandma Woo. They each have their own special talents. Sunny always finds the bright side, Amber celebrates self-expression, Roco talks to trees, Madame Lotus gives scrumptious hugs, Melody has a song for every occasion, Mama Mojo makes magical food—and Grandma Woo knows ancient secrets that the rest of us are still trying to understand.
Aside from all of that completely normal behavior (yeah right!), there is something else hiding inside the bus: a mysterious printing press. It produces The Mystic Express, a magical newspaper filled with stories that children need to hear. Every edition must be finished before midnight so the newspapers can fly across the world and arrive by sunrise.
Simple enough—except the bus has ideas of its own.
It doesn’t always go where I tell it to go, the stories are rarely what they first appear to be, and the printer refuses to start until our adventure is truly complete. Apparently, whoever drives the bus is also the newspaper’s editor—which is a lot of responsibility for someone who still isn’t sure what half the mysterious buttons do!
Together, we travel through a lush and magical corner of the Pacific, following curious clues and trying to finish each edition on time. Life aboard The Mystic Express is full of friendship, music, mindfulness, mysteries and a fair share of mischief. Along the way, I’m learning to follow my intuition, trust my unusual new friends and accept that being the editor doesn’t mean I can control everything. Sometimes the story finds us!
Episodes are standalone and follow Lucy and the Mischievous Goddesses as they travel through a mysterious corner of the Pacific aboard their magical bus, searching for the next story for The Mystic Express newspaper.
Each episode revolves around a particular theme—such as bravery, intuition, cooperation or trusting the timing.
Lucy begins with a plan for getting the newspaper finished before midnight, but the bus soon takes the group somewhere unexpected. A curious story begins to unfold, and the Mischievous Goddesses use their unique talents to help Lucy investigate. The story is rarely what it first appears to be, and Lucy must learn something about the episode’s theme before they can complete their adventure.
Episodes end with the mystery solved, the lesson learned and the magical printer finally springing to life. As the finished newspapers fly off to reach children everywhere by sunrise, Lucy reflects on what she has discovered—and wonders where the bus will take them next.
The visual style of The Mystic Express feels mystical, magical and earthy, with muted psychedelic colors reminiscent of analog films made in the late 1960s. The lush Pacific landscape becomes part of the show’s magic, creating a world that feels wild, timeless and just slightly removed from ordinary reality.
The show features a wide range of mixed media, including handcrafted puppetry and live-action special effects, such as kaleidoscopes turning in front of the lens and newspapers flying through the air. The bus has a unique, tactile quality, filled with mysterious compartments, curious objects and colorful details that make it both captivating and avant-garde.
Humor is a driving force of the show, allowing big lessons to be delivered in a light and funny way. The Mystic Expressexplores new-age and spiritual ideas such as intuition, mindfulness and divine timing—but always takes opportunities to poke fun at itself! Lucy’s sensible plans are continually interrupted by a bus with ideas of its own and seven Mischievous Goddesses who rarely do anything the expected way.
Costume and set design will be bohemian and dreamy, with close attention to detail ensuring each scene is a total delight to the senses. The cozy, colorful world inside the bus will contrast with the jungles, beaches, mountains and winding roads of its mysterious Pacific setting.
The soundtrack will feel groovy and instrumental while remaining timeless. All of the music will be original and play a leading role in the show. Each episode will feature songs performed by Lucy or the Mischievous Goddesses, akin to a music video—adding humor, emotion and another creative layer.
As well as being absolutely glamorous, the tone of The Mystic Express is playful and fun, creating an accessible platform for tackling life’s biggest questions and instilling important values such as kindness, courage and trust.
Set in an unnamed corner of the Pacific, the show will feature a diverse cast of characters, honoring the many cultures, appearances and ways of being found throughout the region so that every child can feel seen and welcome.
