The Mystic Express is an original children’s television series created and filmed on the island of Maui. Set aboard a mysterious old school bus, the show follows Lucy and seven colorful Mischievous Goddesses as they travel through a lush corner of the Pacific, following curious clues and producing a magical newspaper filled with stories children need to hear.
The series is filmed on Lucy’s jungle property, where she also runs imaginative summer camps for children. Winding paths, tropical gardens, an orchard and the Secret Jungle House provide a naturally enchanted setting for the show. It is a place where children already gather to make art, explore nature, practice mindfulness and enter worlds created through storytelling and play.
At the heart of the series is a real school bus, transformed into the traveling home of the Mischievous Goddesses and the headquarters of The Mystic Express newspaper. The bus is more than a setting—it has a mysterious personality of its own, choosing the direction of each journey and leading the characters towards stories they never expected to find.
The show’s puppets were designed, crafted and brought to life by Lucy herself. Their handmade costumes, expressive faces and wonderfully imperfect details give each Goddess her own distinctive personality. Props, sets and magical effects are also created practically wherever possible, giving the series the warm, tactile quality of children’s television from another era.
Inspired by the imaginative programs of the late 1960s and 1970s, The Mystic Express blends puppetry, live action, music, comedy and analogue magic. Its world feels playful, slightly mysterious and entirely handmade—a refreshing alternative to the fast, highly polished digital entertainment children encounter every day.
Beneath the mischief and adventure, each episode gently explores an idea that can help children navigate real life: trusting their intuition, expressing themselves, caring for nature, understanding their emotions, practising kindness and accepting that not everything can be controlled. These lessons are woven naturally into the story rather than delivered as instruction.
The Mystic Express began as a real, beautifully illustrated newspaper for children, delivered on the solstices and equinoxes. The television series expands that world, revealing where its mysterious stories come from—and the extraordinary characters working behind the scenes to ensure every edition reaches children by sunrise.
Created independently on Maui, The Mystic Express is a small production with a wonderfully big world: handmade with imagination, guided by intuition and created to remind children that their words are powerful, their ideas matter and a little mystery still exists.
